Military equivalent
Genin: They are equivalent to Junior enlisted-men in the military, they are basically the grunts
Chūnin: They are equivalent to Non-Commissioned Officers in the military, they are basically the average ninja
Tokubetsu Jōnin: They are equivalent to Warrant Officers in the military, they have an area of specialties where they are the elite in that field.
Jōnin: They are equivalent to Commissioned Officers in the military, they are the all around elite, and excel in every field.
Kage: They are equivalent to the Supreme Commander of the military, they are the best in the village, and are in charge of their village's entire ninja organization.
Leadership skills
Genin: More experienced Genin may lead squads of other experienced Genin on D and C rank Missions
Chūnin: Chūnin may lead platoons of Genin, and more experienced Chūnin may lead squads of Chūnin on C and B rank missions
Tokubetsu Jōnin: Tokubetsu Jōnin may lead Platoons of Chūnin, and more experienced Tokubetsu Jōnin may lead Squads of Tokubetsu Jōnin on B and A rank Missions
Jōnin: Jōnin may lead regiments of Chūnin, and Jōnin may lead platoons of Tokubetsu Jōnin on A and S rank missions. More experienced Jōnin may lead squads of Jōnin on S rank missions, also Jōnin may become a sensei for a Genin squad. Jōnin may also go on B and A rank missions alone

Platoon = 6 - 8 Ninja
Regiment = 16 - 24 Ninja
Division = 48 - 72 ninja
Rank Advancement

Chūnin: Pass your village's Chūnin exams
Tokubetsu Jōnin: Appointment by your village's Kage
Jōnin: Appointment by your village's Kage
Chūnin Exam tests:
Information gathering Examination: The Examiner will test your Information gathering skills
Mission Examination: The Examiner will assign missions to test your ability to complete missions with out a sensei
Combat examination: The Examiner will pair you off with other Genin for one on one combat, and the Kage, and Jōnin of the village will determine if any of you will become a Chūnin.
